On this day, September 12, 1978, recording artist Ruben Studdard was born in Frankfurt, Germany. He grew up in a military family where his father served in the U.S. Army. They later moved to Birmingham, Alabama where Studdard was raised.

Studdard rose to fame after winning the second season of American Idol in 2003. He is known for his beautiful vocals and was given the nickname “Velvet Teddy Bear”. His music is a blend of smooth R&B and gospel, which often draws comparison to the legendary Luther Vandross.

Studdard released his debut album, “Soulful,” in 2003 following his “American Idol” victory. The album featured his hit single “Flying Without Wings.” He continued to release several more albums over the years, including “I Need an Angel”, “The Return”, “Love Is”, and more.
