For years, rapper Mystikal was known as one of Southern hip-hop’s most energetic and distinctive voices. With platinum-selling albums, Grammy nominations, and chart-topping hits such as “Shake It Fast,“ “Danger (Been So Long),” and “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against the Wall),” the New Orleans rapper became one of the defining voices of late-1990s and early-2000s rap. However, his musical accomplishments have been overshadowed by his troubled legal history.
On June 16, 2026, 55-year-old Michael Lawrence Tyler, better known as Mystikal, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to third-degree rape in connection with a 2022 sexual assault case in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. He originally faced a far more serious charge of first-degree rape, along with several additional felony charges that included robbery, false imprisonment, domestic abuse by strangulation, and criminal property damage. If convicted on the original rape charge, he could have faced a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. Instead, prosecutors reached a plea agreement that reduced the rape charge to third-degree while dismissing the remaining charges. Under the agreement, the maximum sentence the court could impose was 20 years, and the judge ultimately handed down the full sentence.
The criminal case stemmed from an incident that occurred in July 2022 at Mystikal’s home in Prairieville, Louisiana. According to investigators, a woman known to the rapper accused him of becoming violent after accusing her of stealing $80,000 in checks. Authorities alleged that Mystikal physically assaulted the woman by punching and choking her before preventing her from leaving the residence by taking her keys and cell phone. Prosecutors further alleged that he sexually assaulted her during the encounter and later used her phone to transfer money before allowing her to leave. Medical personnel documented injuries consistent with an assault, and investigators quickly identified Mystikal as the suspect. He was arrested and remained jailed without bond while awaiting trial.

Earlier this year, Mystikal entered a guilty plea to the reduced charge. His attorneys later attempted to withdraw the plea, arguing that he had been emotionally distressed and did not fully understand the agreement at the time it was was entered. The court rejected the request, allowing the sentencing hearing to proceed. During that hearing, the victim delivered an emotional statement describing the lasting physical and emotional trauma she has experienced since the assault. She urged the court to impose the maximum sentence allowed by law.
One of the most striking moments of the hearing came when Mystikal addressed the court. According to courtroom reports, he stated, “If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence.” After considering the evidence, victim impact statement, and terms of the plea agreement, the judge sentenced the rapper to the full 20-year prison term.
This is not Mystikal’s first prison sentence. In 2003, he pleaded guilty to sexual battery and extortion involving his hairstylist. He served approximately six years in prison and was required to register as a lifetime sex offender. After his release, he attempted to revive his music career by releasing new music, booking numerous shows, and making public appearances, but continued to face legal issues over the years. A separate rape case filed against him in 2017 was eventually dismissed, but the allegations continued to cast a shadow over his public image.
Despite his legal troubles, Mystikal’s influence on Southern hip-hop remains undeniable. Rising to prominence during the late 1990s as part of Master P’s No Limit Records before achieving mainstream success with Jive Records. Mystikal became known for his distinctive voice, rapid-fire flow, and high-energy performances. During his career, he released six studio albums, selling over 6 million copies.
Throughout all the success Mystikal has achieved, many feel the rapper’s legacy has been tarnished after multiple convictions for crimes against women. The 20-year prison sentence eliminates any chance of the talented rapper making a comeback to the music scene.
Mystikal’s earliest release date could happen in 2046 when he is 75 years old.
